Girl. My hair started shedding something crazyyyy in my third month of postpartum. I mean, just me running my hand through my ponytail was WILD.
I was talking to another new Mom and she told me that’s what happened to her but she reassured me that it would grow back, especially taking my prenatal vitamins I’m optimistic but geesh!
For a little context, I’m a hair growth FANATIC lbs so to be losing this much hair is ringing the alarm for me. This is where I started with my hair, and below that is where I am now (taken way before all of the shedding ).
I didn’t know about this part of postpartum and did a little research:
- Your hair sheds daily but when you’re expecting, your pregnancy hormones keep those hairs from falling out, allowing the hair to give what it needs to give all 9 months
- During postpartum, your hormones go back to normal which means the hair begins to start shedding. A LOT.
- Your hair should be back to normal by your baby’s first birthday (so they say!)
Tips:
- Less is more. Leave your hair alone if you can
- Be extraaa gentle when detangling your hair
- Use satin scrunchies vs. elastic ones and avoid tight ponytails
- Avoid the heat if you can (blow drier, flat irons) and any chemicals
- Just let it fall, girl. Ain’t nothing you can really do about it.
Quick tips on how I grew my hair over the last 2 years:
- No heat! NO COLOR!
- A few rice water treatments
- Satin pillowcases and scarfs
- Leaving my hair alone (I wore two braids to the back, super moisturized, almost everyday during Covid!)
- African Pride Moisture Miracle Coconut Oil & Baobab Oil Leave-In Cream
- Oils, oils, and more oils! Specifically peppermint oil and African Pride Moisture Miracle 5 essential oils.
- Difeel Ultra Growth with Basil & Castor Oil: Shampoo, Conditioner and Hair Growth Oil
- Following hair recipes from Ro MustLive on YouTube
For the Baby:
CZN hair started to come out because she slept on our chest her first month of life I know it’s not recommended BUT it was the only way ANY of us could get some sleep. I was able to save her from a complete bald spot but her hair did break off in some areas before I started the satin protection. But it’s growing back so beautifully and FAST!
I started to use:
- Satin pillowcases in her crib, tucked TIGHTLY under/across her mattress
- Satin pillowcases anytime she lays on her boppy or sits in her chair.
- Basically anything her head will rub against, there’s some protection now!
As for (baby) hair products:
- Shea Moisture Coconut Oil Baby Wash & Shampoo
- 100% Virgin Coconut Oil
- Sweet Almond Oil (I like this better than coconut oil; it feels better to me and it grew her hair super fast.
- Frida Baby DermaFrida Skin Soother for her scalp
I hope you found this helpful, Mama (and Mama to be)!
